Two men were killed early Sunday when the car in which they were riding crashed into a guardrail and burst into flames on the Garden Grove Freeway, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the men, who were burned beyond recognition and could not be immediately identified, were ejected from the car after it struck a signpost at 2:40 a.m. near the Glassell Avenue off ramp in the City of Orange.
CHP dispatcher Stacia Lundquist said the car was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when it careened between guardrails separating the freeway lanes from the Glassell off ramp.
The car then hit a three-foot-wide signpost, erupted in flames and came to rest against a chain-link fence above the Santiago Creek overpass.
An investigation into the cause of the accident and the identities of the victims was continuing.
