After two years as chief of San Francisco’s heavily traveled Municipal Railway, William G. Stead surprised the city’s leaders by saying he will leave his $97,000-a-year post in December to take the top transit job in Philadelphia. Stead reportedly will make $125,000 a year as general manager of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority.
