Four former CIA agents who left the agency after becoming disillusioned by covert operations in the Third World said they will lead a national campaign to end such activities. The co-founders of the Center for the Study of Covert Action said they plan “to inform the American people . . . about the true nature of covert action,” which they said is a record of secret wars against legitimate governments around the world. In a Los Angeles news conference, they said the CIA action has cost millions of lives. The dissident former agents--author Philip Agee, John Stockwell, Phil Roettinger and David MacMichael--hope to raise about $100,000 to establish an office in Washington and hire a permanent staff.
