Pilot Lands Disabled Plane in L.A. River

A pilot on a sightseeing flight with his children safely landed his small plane in the concrete-lined bed of the Los Angeles River when the engine malfunctioned over Long Beach, police said.
Leonard Spall, 44, of Hermosa Beach, managed to glide the Piper Cherokee onto the riverbed south of Wardlow Road about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Lt. Gary Whinery said. Spall and his children, ages 20, 19 and 12, had just flown over the Queen Mary when the plane lost power, Whinery said.
