A federal magistrate in Minneapolis denied a request by the National Football League’s Management Council to join the league as a defendant in a lawsuit brought against the league by the NFL Players Assn.
Attorneys for the Management Council argued that the case, challenging the legality of the NFL player draft, is more a labor dispute than an antitrust matter.
On Dec. 30, a Minneapolis federal judge will consider the NFL’s request for dismissal, and the union’s request for a court order making about 500 players free agents Feb. 1 and an immediate summary judgment in its favor.
