PADOVA, Italy — Giovanni Evangelisti of Italy said Saturday that he was “renouncing” a bronze medal that he won in the long jump at the World Track and Field Championships because of doubts cast upon his victory.
Evangelisti, 26, told the news agency ANSA that there had been “a substantial lack of sensitivity toward myself and my name in regard to the jump of 8.38 meters (27 feet 6 inches) at the World Championships in Rome.”
An Italian television report, basing its conclusions on a computer analysis, claimed that Evangelisti had only jumped 25-7.
