Loyola’s Victory Is a Record-Breaker, 134-106

PORTLAND, Ore. — Hank Gathers scored 34 points to lead Loyola Marymount to its 10th straight victory Thursday night, a 134-106 defeat of Portland in a West Coast Athletic Conference game that set several scoring records.
The 134 points was a new record for the WCAC, breaking the old mark of 126 held by Nevada Las Vegas. The combined total of 240 points also was a record, topping the 225 set by Santa Clara and St. Mary’s in the 1970-71 season. Santa Clara won that double-overtime contest, 114-111.
It was also the most points ever scored against Portland, breaking the old mark of 124 set three times against the Pilots.
Loyola (13-3 overall, 3-0 in the WCAC) led, 50-45, with four minutes to play in the first half. The Lions then scored 12 straight points to take a 62-45 lead.
Portland (5-11, 0-3) narrowed the gap to 66-54 by halftime. However, Gathers scored six points in a 12-0 Loyola run to open the second half to seal the victory.
Mike Yoest scored 26 points and Bo Kimble 23 for Loyola.
Portland, which lost its third straight, was led by Robert Phillips with 27.
