U.S. Trade Representative Clayton K. Yeutter arrived in Beijing on Monday to sign a textile agreement and confer with top Chinese officials on Sino-U.S. trade issues. In December, China and the United States concluded a four-year agreement that will cut the annual growth rate of Chinese cloth and clothing exports to the United States to 3% from 19%. The rapid rise in textile shipments has been one area of strain in trade relations, which have steadily expanded in recent years. Another issue expected to come up when Yeutter meets acting Premier Li Peng and other senior officials is China’s unhappiness with the pace of U.S. sales of high-technology products to China.
