Censoring School Newspapers

Prof. Theodore Mitchell in his column on freedom of speech in high school (Op-Ed Page, Jan. 21), argues in effect that schools are (or should be) no different from any other of our society’s institutions.
Let’s carry his absurd premise to its absurd conclusion. Why don’t we let students plan their own curricula, and choose their own textbooks?
Or better yet, shouldn’t we allow them to write their own textbooks? After all, this is a democray, isn’t it?
