Gaines Quits Administrative Post

Smokey Gaines, former San Diego State basketball coach, resigned Monday from his position as assistant athletic director, said Fred Miller, SDSU athletic director.
Gaines was named assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions after he resigned as basketball coach at the end of the 1986-87 season.
After a 6-21 record in his first season in 1979-80, Gaines guided SDSU to five straight winning seasons, including a National Invitation Tournament appearance in 1982 and an NCAA tournament berth in 1985.
COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Carlos Briceno had 16 kills and Damien Hardy added 14 to lead the University of Hawaii to a 15-11, 15-9, 15-10 victory over San Diego State in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match in Peterson Gym.
Hawaii (9-3 overall, 3-2 in the WIVA) was ranked fourth by the Tachikara coaches’ poll, the national poll for college volleyball. SDSU (4-4, 1-1) was eighth. The Aztecs upset Hawaii on Saturday, 3-2.
Hugh Foster led SDSU with 19 kills and 6 blocks.
