The former May Co. building in downtown Los Angeles, a landmark in the city’s retailing core since 1906, was purchased by Broadway Trade Center, a private investment partnership, in a transaction valued at $25.3 million. Originally constructed as Hamburger’s Department Store just after the turn of the century, the structure at 801 S. Broadway consisted initially of six floors above ground and two below for a total of 500,000 square feet. May Co. purchased the building in 1928 and added a nine-story addition, bringing the building’s total square footage to nearly 1 million.
