Canada to Increase Patrols in the North

YELLOWKNIFE, Canada — The government said Thursday that it intends to expand Canadian Ranger patrols in the Arctic as part of a move to assert sovereignty over its vast northern territory.
National Defense Minister Perrin Beatty said that over the next five years, the size of the part-time reserve force, with a membership mostly of Eskimos, will be increased to nearly 1,000 in 50 communities.
