High School Winter Sports : Harvard Turns Deaf Ear to Coach and Wins

Harvard High wrestling Coach Lee Roberts will never be confused with Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda when it comes to inspirational speeches.
Then again, it has been a long time since Lasorda’s club pulled off an upset such as the one the Saracens managed Thursday night as they beat Alemany, 31-23, in a Santa Fe League match at Alemany.
“I told the boys I thought we would lose and to just go out and wrestle a good match,” Roberts said.
But once the match started, Harvard did even better. “Our kids were going crazy,” Roberts said. Harvard’s Chris Wong beat David Wardlow, 13-5, in the 148-pound class. Wardlow had been undefeated in league matches. Freshman Akir Gutierrez, recently called up from the junior varsity, beat Alemany’s Chris Carmona in the 115-pound class. “That was the biggest upset of them all,” Roberts said.
And once Harvard won, did the team thank Roberts for his inspirational words?
“We got back on the bus and they said, ‘We’re not listening to you again, coach,’ ” Roberts said.
