South Korean President-elect Roh Tae Woo announced the appointment of Lee Hyun Jae, a leading moderate, as prime minister in line with plans for broad democratic reforms. Lee, 58, an economics professor and former president of Seoul National University, has been a prominent critic of authoritarian rule and human rights abuses. He said his main task will be to achieve rapid democratic reform. Roh announced the appointment two weeks before he is to take over Feb. 25 from President Chun Doo Hwan.
