Los Angeles Southwest College will celebrate its 20th anniversary, honor its founders and formally inaugurate Thomas G. Lakin as president Feb. 26.
The ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. on the campus with the planting of the 20th cypress tree at the college.
Assemblywoman Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) will pay tribute to Odessa Cox and 36 others whose efforts led to the founding of the college in 1968.
Lakin, who is credited with reviving Southwest after years of decline, will be inaugurated in the campus Little Theatre at 11:45 a.m. A former vice president of academic affairs at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and assistant dean at Harbor College, Lakin was named acting president of Southwest in March, 1986. The appointment was made permanent last spring.
