The Nation : Prosecutor Defends Nofziger Conviction

Lyn Nofziger’s request to throw out his influence-peddling conviction or grant him a new trial should be denied because the ex-White House aide is simply “grasping at straws,” the government said. In a 20-page brief filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, independent prosecutor James C. McKay said the government had proved its illegal lobbying case beyond a reasonable doubt. A federal jury convicted Nofziger Feb. 11 on three counts of illegal lobbying for Wedtech Corp. and two other companies. Nofziger could receive a six-year sentence and a $30,000 fine when he is sentenced March 25. McKay also asked the court to deny a request for a new trial.
