CAMPAIGN ’88 : ‘Loser’ in Rights Vote

Democratic presidential candidate Jesse Jackson called Vice President George Bush “the real loser” as Congress voted Tuesday to override President Reagan’s veto of the Civil Rights Restoration Act.
Bush’s support of the veto, disclosed Monday, was “immoral and impolitic,” Jackson told reporters on his bus as he campaigned in Michigan for Saturday’s presidential caucus.

At a press conference earlier in Kalamazoo, Jackson said the Reagan Administration’s attempt to override the civil rights legislation was part of a long-term attempt to “undermine the civil rights movement in this country.”
