If there’s a sophomore jinx, Brent Noon showed it doesn’t apply to him.
Noon, from Fallbrook High School, set personal records in the shot put and the discus last Thursday during a dual meet and was named the outstanding athlete of the boys’ division Saturday at the 35th Mustang Relays at San Dieguito.
He threw the discus 170-3 and the shot 60-9 in the dual meet against Vista; both represent records for a sophomore in San Diego County.
Last year, Noon finished sixth in the state in the shot and sixth in San Diego County in the discus.
BASEBALL
Felipe Preciado didn’t play baseball last season, but it certainly wasn’t for lack of ability.
Preciado, who did not go out for the team in 1987, had two victories and an excellent week at the plate playing for Hoover High in the GMC Tournament.
Preciado, 6-feet 4-inches, was the winning pitcher in Hoover’s 17-2 victory over Mar Vista and won in relief in a 10-9 victory over Grossmont.
Preciado was 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs against Mar Vista and was 2 for 3 with an RBI against Grossmont.
As the starting tailback for the Helix football team, Spike Mitchell is used to carrying the load.
Mitchell unloaded on Granite Hills in the third-place game of the Hilltop-Moose baseball tournament Saturday.
Mitchell went 3 for 4, including a grand slam and 7 RBIs, in the Highlanders’ 15-6 rout.
