The Toronto Blue Jays have denied reports that they are about to trade George Bell to the New York Yankees for Dave Winfield.
Bell, the 1987 American League MVP, is reportedly upset that the Blue Jays want to shift him from left field to designated hitter. Bell, who was fined and suspended last week for refusing to DH in a game, went 0 for 4 as the DH in Tuesday’s exhibition against the Philadelphia Phillies.
“There’s no truth to the George Bell-Dave Winfield trade talks,” said Pat Gillick, Toronto’s general manager. “We’re not going to trade George Bell, and it would be foolish from our standpoint to put George Bell in the same division as us.”
