A local shoe company Wednesday presented three Los Angeles Unified School District elementary schools with checks for $10,000 each as part of the district’s Adopt-a-School Program.
The Volume Shoe Corp., which operates the Payless Shoe Source chain, gave a total of $30,000 to Sierra Vista, Pio Pico and 102nd Street schools. The schools will use the money for a variety of purposes, including buying books, maps, globes and classroom furniture, according to Wayne Carlson, who directs the 10-year-old program.
About 525 local businesses sponsor 650 of the district’s regular and adult schools and children’s centers, providing special services such as tutoring in addition to monetary contributions.
