Homosexuality is now legal in Israel. The Knesset repealed a law predating Israel’s independence in 1948 that had declared sex between consenting adults of the same gender to be illegal. The measure was adopted as part of a package of sex and sex-crime laws that include harsher sentences for rapists. Although no one had ever been prosecuted for homosexual activity in Israel’s nearly 40-year history, the old law had provided a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
