WASHINGTON — Drivers carrying illegal drugs have lost 542 vehicles in the last five weeks to the U.S. Customs Service under a new government program, the agency said Friday.
The program, dubbed “Zero Tolerance” and in effect since March 21, permits the service to seize vehicles belonging to drivers caught importing even the smallest amount of illicit substances.
One driver carrying a single marijuana cigarette lost an 18-wheeler tractor trailer worth $120,000, the service said.
