Area Roundup : Bobby Schwartz to Try to Make It Three in a Row at Speedway Races

Bobby Schwartz, the 1987 U.S. champion, will try for his third consecutive scratch main event victory tonight at the weekly speedway motorcycle races in the Orange County Fairgrounds at Costa Mesa.
Schwartz established a national record with 56 scratch main event victories last season and has won two of the four main events since the season began at Costa Mesa.
Bart Bast, 20, cousin of Mike Bast, a former seven-time U.S. champion, will seek his second handicap main event victory of the year. Bast won the race last week, the first time he has won a main event at Costa Mesa in his three-year career.
Three Team Kawasaki professional motocross riders, Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien and Jeff Matiasevich, will autograph racing posters tonight near the track entrance on Kawasaki Night.
The three riders will be at the Kawasaki tent beginning at 7 p.m. The first 1,000 fans also will receive a free cap. Racing begins at 8 p.m.
Freshman Cheri Schreck of Chapman College’s softball team was named first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. by a vote of the conference’s coaches.
Schreck posted a 12-9 record with an 0.62 earned-run average and a conference-record 129 strikeouts to lead the Panthers to the NCAA Division II regionals for the first time since 1984.
Senior outfielder Sally Meyer (.324), junior second baseman Leslie Burke (.294, 2 home runs, 26 RBIs) and senior shortstop Karen Zupan (.283, 19 RBIs) were named to the second team.
Registration forms for the seventh Corona del Mar Scenic 5-kilometer run, which will be held June 11, are available at the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce office and the City of Newport Beach Parks, Beach and Recreation Department.
The men’s race will start at 8 a.m. and the women’s at 8:20 a.m.
Registration is $15, which includes a T-shirt and breakfast. It will cost $20 to register the same day as the race if space is available. Practice runs are every Tuesday at Ocean Boulevard and Marguerite at 5:30 p.m.

The Saddleback Gaucho baseball camp for boys ages 8-16 will hold two sessions this summer. The first session will be June 20-24 and the second will be June 27-July 1. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and will be held at the Mission Viejo Athletic Facility.
The camp, which will cover pitching, catching, hitting, bunting, baserunning and strategy, will be run by Marshall Adair, Saddleback College baseball coach. Registration deadline for each camp is 10 days before its start. For more information, call 661-0677.

Shanon Winkelman of Marina High School has signed a national letter of intent to attend UC Riverside in the fall. Winkelman is the top high school two-miler in Orange County and is third-ranked nationally. . . . Deric Ryals of El Toro, who recently won the state Golden Gloves super heavyweight championship, will travel to Omaha, Neb., to compete in the national Golden Gloves tournament, May 16-21.
