MERCURY, Nev. — Actor Martin Sheen was among 311 people arrested Sunday in a peaceful Mother’s Day protest at the nation’s nuclear testing grounds.
About 750 people took part in the demonstration, Energy Department spokeswoman Barbara Yoerg said. Sponsors of the protest, Mothers and Others Connecting All, had forecast a turnout of 1,000 to 1,500.
Both the turnout and the number of arrests were lower than at demonstrations earlier this year at the site.
Most of those arrested were cited on misdemeanor trespass charges, taken to nearby trailers for booking, and then released.
