Chiang’s WWII Veterans Stage Protest in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Hundreds of retired Nationalist Chinese soldiers, the remnants of Chiang Kai-shek’s World War II armies, clashed with riot police in Taiwan on Wednesday during a protest march over compensation for their wartime service. Ten protesters were arrested and 10 policemen were injured, police said.
Chiang fled to Taiwan from China with his Nationalist government in 1949, bringing with him almost 2 million soldiers and civilians. The soldiers were given deeds to land in China and were promised they could be redeemed when the Nationalists eventually recovered control over China from the Communists, who had driven them from power.
Some of the soldiers are now impoverished, working in menial jobs, and are demanding money in exchange for the deeds.
