The Israeli army has stepped up protection for Israeli-appointed Palestinian officials after the stabbing of a West Bank mayor, the Maariv newspaper reported. It did not specify what action was being taken, and an army spokesman declined to comment. Hassan Tawil, 74, mayor of Al Birah, was reported in stable condition after being stabbed, apparently by a Palestinian opposed to cooperation with the Israelis. Meanwhile, an Arab youth died after being beaten by Israeli troops, doctors at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City said. Hussein abu Jallalah, 19, died after being beaten in a refugee camp, the doctors said.
