CAMPAIGN ’88 : Nunn Cool to No. 2 Spot
Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.) said Friday that he has told Dukakis’ campaign chairman that he is not interested in the vice presidential nomination.
Nunn said he did not rule out accepting such an offer, saying in an interview it would be “very presumptuous” to respond to hypothetical questions about what he would do if the No. 2 spot were offered by Dukakis, the likely Democratic presidential nominee.
However, he said: “It’s not my desire to have that job offered to me and then to turn it down. I don’t think that’s good for the process” or for Dukakis.
Nunn, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was among the members of Congress who met individually this week with Paul Brountas, Dukakis’ campaign chairman, to discuss the vice presidency.
