Advo-System Inc. reached a settlement in its litigation with the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, a subsidiary of the New York Times Co., involving alleged price fixing and restraint of trade. Advo, a direct-mail advertising firm, began a federal antitrust case in May, 1987, alleging that the group and numerous other newspapers conspired to prevent Advo’s access to certain newspaper market research data. The group has agreed to refrain from entering into or participating in any agreement with suppliers or other newspapers preventing Advo’s access to such market research data, or fixing the prices of such data. The New York Times subsidiary also agreed to make a substantial donation to the United Way of Hartford, Conn., in the name of Advo, which is based in Windsor, Conn. Among the other newspaper parties involved are the Los Angeles Times and Scripps Howard.
