A brush fire burned more than 70 acres on Battle Mountain near Lake Hodges on Friday afternoon.
The fire, which was first reported at about 2:30 p.m. near Interstate 15 and Pomerado Road, burned freely for two hours before it was brought under control, said San Diego Fire Department spokeswoman Angie Smith.
At one point, 35 homes were directly threatened, but none was damaged, Smith said. The flames were stopped about 200 feet from the houses.
About 125 firefighters from the San Diego, Poway, Escondido, San Marcos, Rancho Santa Fe and Vista fire departments and the California Department of Forestry, plus two air tankers from Ramona contributed.
