Jim Abbott of the University of Michigan held the Japanese All-Stars scoreless for five innings, but Japan rallied to edge a touring American collegiate squad in the third game of the baseball series in Sendai, Japan, 4-3.
Abbott allowed 1 hit and struck out 7 in 5 innings.
“I was stunned to see his fastball has become so much faster in one year,” said Yukichi Maeda, a Keio University coach who led the Japanese team’s U.S. tour last year.
Abbott, who uses only his left hand for throwing and fielding because he was born without a right hand, is the first-round draft choice of the Angels.
