The son of former vice presidential candidate Geraldine A. Ferraro will begin a four-month sentence today for selling a quarter-gram of cocaine after gaining preliminary approval to serve it under house arrest. John A. Zaccaro Jr. was sentenced two weeks ago, but the sentence was stayed 30 days pending appeal to the Vermont Supreme Court. But in a surprise move, Zaccaro’s lawyers dropped the request for the stay and asked that Zaccaro, 24, begin serving his sentence. Judge Francis McCaffrey, in sentencing Zaccaro, had suggested he be allowed to participate in a new state program under which he would live in a Corrections Department-approved apartment and could leave only with permission.
