Commander Cody’s so-called “freak rock” is an eclectic, revved-up blend of country, rockabilly and Western swing. With “His Lost Planet Airmen,” the Commander--nee George Frayne--scored his first, and only, Top 40 success in 1972 with the novelty tune, “Hot Rod Lincoln.” Since then, he’s amassed a small but loyal cult following thanks mostly to the stellar musicianship of his sidemen, who in past years have included the likes of singer Nicolette Larson, ex-Wings drummer Joe English and harmonica player Norton Buffalo (who later joined the Steve Miller Band). Cody will be in town Saturday at the Bacchanal nightclub in Kearny Mesa.
