Jack Goldberger; Called Bay Area’s ‘Mr. Labor’
Jack Goldberger, 84, known as “Mr. Labor” in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than four decades. Starting as a founder and business agent for the Newspaper and Periodical Drivers Local 921 in 1937, he rose to become president of the San Francisco Labor Council, the Bay Area Council of Teamsters, the American Federation of Labor and the Western Conference of Teamsters. Goldberger, a negotiator, arbitrator and emissary in labor negotiations, boasted that during his career he never called a strike and that he had averted numerous strikes by other unions.
