Argentina’s trade unions denounced new government anti-inflation measures and threatened to call a general strike in protest. The steps do not benefit workers, said Saul Ubaldini, head of the General Confederation of Labor. Ubaldini said he has asked for an urgent meeting with President Raul Alfonsin, who described the measures he unveiled earlier this week as a decisive attack on inflation that would require sacrifices from everyone. The reforms include a pact with industry to restrain price increases, a 30% rise in public utility and fuel prices, sharp cuts in government spending and a currency devaluation.
