Philippine officials are investigating two separate attacks on Americans--the attempted bombing of a U.S. serviceman’s car and the kidnaping of an American tourist and his wife by Muslim bandits. At Clark Air Base, a homemade bomb was found Saturday attached to Air Force Master Sgt. Francisco Calabia’s car, officials said. Bomb disposal experts were called in and dismantled the device. In the kidnaping case, the military sent two mediators in search of a rebel band that seized David Stiffler, 47, a New York construction worker and anthropology student, and his Philippine wife July 30 on Mindanao Island. On Sunday, an emissary for the group delivered a demand for a $5,000 ransom and a tape recording in which the captives appealed for their lives.
