4 Americans Lost Off Indonesia Coast

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Search crews have been unable to locate a small cruise boat with 10 people aboard--including four Americans--that has been adrift in the Indian Ocean for nine days, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said Monday.

Two Indonesian military helicopters are scanning the waters around Penaitan Island, about 80 miles west of the capital of Jakarta, for the Water Jewel, a converted fishing boat.

Americans Bruce Hansel and Danny Camplin abandoned the vessel Aug. 13 and swam ashore shortly after its motor failed. The boat was sailing in the Sunda Strait, which separates the islands of Java and Sumatra.

Four other Americans--all from Hawaii--two Australians and one Indonesian passenger remained aboard the crippled craft along with the crew of three, he said.
