National Park Service Director William Penn Mott said he remains committed to removing most man-made facilities from the Giant Forest area of Sequoia National Park. Mott acknowledged that there has been considerable delay in moving the buildings from the area, but he said he plans to talk to Congress to see whether money will be provided to get the project going again. The 1979 Giant Forest-Lodgepole development plan called for converting Giant Forest--the prime attraction in the park--into a day-use-only area with a visitor center and one or two historical structures remaining. The other buildings, including a hotel, cabins and stores and shops, were to be moved to a less sensitive area of the park. However, implementation was delayed by a lack of funds. “We are going to move forward on that project; we have got to get that job done,” Mott said during a tour of Sequoia.
