Atransient and his dog died early Thursday after being struck by a Southern Pacific Railways freight train just south of Newhall, Los Angeles police said.
The man, whose age and identity were not immediately known, was killed about 8:40 a.m. in the 14400 block of San Fernando Road near Sierra Highway, said Sgt. David Johnson of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire Division.
The victim and his dog were apparently walking or lying in the middle of the train tracks and did not hear the northbound train coming, Johnson said. “There is no evidence of any foul play,” he said.
The man’s dog, a German shepherd, was found about 30 feet from its owner and was so severely injured that officers had to destroy it, he said.
