A new opinion poll shows Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s Progressive Conservative Party trailing for the first time in the campaign for the parliamentary election Nov. 21. Pollster Martin Goldfarb released a survey showing the John Turner-led Liberal Party with the support of 41% of the voters, up 12 points from a survey two weeks ago. The Tories ran a distant second in the poll with the support of 34% of the voters, a slip of nine points from a poll two weeks ago. The leftist New Democratic Party was down four points with 24%. Analysts say Turner’s relentless attack on Mulroney’s support for the U.S.-Canadian free-trade treaty in last week’s debate was the key in gaining new support for the Liberals.
