The State : Caught in Act, Deputy Quits

A deputy sheriff caught on videotape sticking his pistol under a motorist’s chin has resigned and could face prosecution for perjury, Sacramento County sheriff’s officials said. Kevin L. Wise, a deputy for four years, is being investigated by the department and the district attorney’s office, said Lou Blanas, assistant to the sheriff. Drunk-driving charges against the motorist, Eric Cameron Johnson, 24, of Sacramento, were dismissed after his attorney gave prosecutors a copy of a videotape of his April 13 arrest. Johnson’s lawyer, Steven E. King, said a security officer at a nearby building videotaped the arrest after he noticed lights and activity on one of his surveillance monitors. Wise denied under oath that he drew his weapon. He testified that Johnson never gave him any reason to use physical force against him.
