CAMPAIGN ’88 : Observers to Watch Vote

The Justice Department will send federal election observers to southern Texas in response to allegations that Republican-sponsored advertisements are designed to intimidate Latino voters, a spokesman said Friday.
Jack Brooks, a Democratic congressman from Texas, had charged Thursday that a “concerted effort is being made by Republican Party officials in Texas to inhibit Texas citizens’ exercise of their right to vote in next Tuesday’s general election.”
Brooks urged Atty. Gen. Dick Thornburgh to investigate. The congressman said the Republican Party of Hidalgo County has launched an advertising campaign on Spanish-language radio stations warning listeners that “voting officials will be watching closely” and citing penalties for illegal voting.
Justice Department spokesman Loye Miller said an undetermined number of observers will be monitoring voting in Hidalgo County.
