Motorola to Purchase Perceptronics’ LaserMaps

Perceptronics in Woodland Hills said Motorola has agreed to buy video-map systems made by Perceptronics over the next two years, a deal that should generate at least $1 million in revenue for Perceptronics.
The system, called LaserMap, displays street and other area maps on a video screen and stores the maps on laser optical disks. Motorola plans to use LaserMap with its Tracknet vehicle-location system, which is used by police and fire departments, ambulance services and utility companies to more effectively dispatch their vehicles.
“To date, 15 combined systems have been installed,” said Gershon Weltman, Perceptronics’ chief executive. If sales “really take off, the agreement could be worth more than $1 million,” he said.
Perceptronics also makes tank simulators and other computer-based training systems. Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Ill., is a major electronic equipment and semiconductor concern.
