A strong cyclone struck southwestern Bangladesh near the border with India, killing at least four people and stranding hundreds. The storm caused floods, destroying homes and crops. Officials feared that the death toll would rise as the storm, with winds of 100 m.p.h., moved inland from the Bay of Bengal. But casualties reportedly were minimized because of warnings to the thinly populated region.
