A 14-month-old Oakland boy died in a fire set off by a hot plate that his family was using to try to stay warm, authorities said. Fire officials said two of the three other occupants were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The Alameda County coroner’s office did not immediately release the identity of the dead child. Fire officials said the blaze was controlled within 20 minutes.
