Pole Makes 1st Winter Climb of 4th Tallest Peak

KATMANDU, Nepal — Polish mountain climber Kryzsztof Wielicki has become the first person to make a winter climb of Mt. Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest peak, the Nepal Tourism Ministry said Tuesday.
Wielicki also has made the first winter climb of Everest, the world’s highest mountain, which stands next to Lhotse, and of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest summit.
The Tourism Ministry said Wielicki, 38, an electronics engineer from Tychy, finished the ascent of the 27,940-foot Lhotse alone on Dec. 31 without using oxygen.
Lhotse was the sixth summit over 26,250 feet for Wielicki, who specializes in winter climbs. Most expeditions make their Himalayan attempts in the autumn when the weather is more reliable and climbing conditions easier.
