Contributions Top $8,000 for Cerritos Scholarship in Memory of Lost Student

NORWALK — More than $8,000 in contributions has been received by Cerritos College in establishing a “living memorial” scholarship for a student who died at sea last year.
The Terry Hammond Memorial Scholarship awards a $200 maximum scholarship per year to any student at the college showing financial need and who is enrolled in a Ford Automotive Services Educational Training Program, a campus official said.
Only the interest portion of the $8,000 will be used for scholarships.
Hammond, a 24-year-old automotive student at the time of his death, went on a fishing trip with friends last May when the boat they were traveling in had engine failure.
Hammond vanished during an attempt to swim to shore in stormy seas, a spokesman said.
