In Brief : Pirates Sign Shortstop Belliard

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to contract terms with shortstop Rafael Belliard for the 1989 season, the team said today.
The 27-year-old Belliard led National League shortstops last season in fielding with a .977 average. He was the first Pirates player to do so since Tim Foli had a .981 average in 1980. Belliard batted .213 in 122 games with no homers and 11 runs batted in last season.
Belliard is the second to sign of eight players who filed recently for arbitration. Third baseman Bobby Bonilla’s signing was announced Wednesday.
