A caller saying he represented the extremist environmental group Earth First claimed responsibility for a fire that gutted half of the Dixon Livestock Auction building just off Interstate 80 between San Francisco and Sacramento. No reason was given for the vandalism, which caused $250,000 in damage. Authorities who extinguished the blaze said arson was suspected. Earth First in the past has promoted tree spikings, to damage saw blades and other equipment used to cut down trees, as a means of protecting the forests.
