Costa Mesa : Four-Car Crash Ties Up Freeway for 1 1/2 Hours

Four people were injured in a four-car accident on the northbound San Diego Freeway about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday that forced two lanes to be closed for 1 1/2 hours, officials said.
CHP Officer Keith Thornhill said three cars in the fast lane slowed to avoid wood debris just past the Fairview Road exit, but a fourth vehicle, a Ford flatbed truck driven by David Duerson, 31, of Santa Barbara, failed to slow down and collided with the rear of a 1984 Buick driven by Robert Davis, 64, of Lakewood.
Davis and three passengers in his car--Thomas Davis, 72, Juanita Davis, 62, and Ruth Davis, 64, all of Lakewood--were injured and taken to local hospitals, Thornhill said.
No one else was injured in the two other cars involved in the chain reaction. Davis’ car struck a 1977 Volvo, driven by Harlan Hatch, 43, of Huntington Beach. Then the Volvo struck a 1980 Oldsmobile driven by William Jones, 71, of Garden Grove.
Thornhill said there were no charges related to the accident.
A spokeswoman for Fountain Valley Regional Hospital & Medical Center said Juanita Davis is in serious condition, and Ruth Davis is in stable condition.
Thomas Davis was reported to be in serious condition Wednesday night in the intensive care unit at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, a spokesman said. Robert Davis was reported to be in stable condition there.
