NEW YORK — Olympic double gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee was honored as the Sporting News’ first Woman of the Year. The weekly sports publication previously had presented a Man of the Year award. The gold medalist in the heptathlon and long jump, Joyner-Kersee received a $15,000 Waterford crystal trophy at a luncheon Wednesday. She won over fellow Olympic stars Florence Griffith Joyner, her sister-in-law, Matt Biondi and Janet Evans. Other athletes who received strong support included Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls and Orel Hershiser of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
